The Open: Why Tiger Woods is battling HISTORY to win at Carnoustie

Jordan Spieth takes share of lead into final day the Open Tiger roars at Carnoustie to serve notice to the rest of the Open field

He's also finished no worse than fifth in his last three Opens, including his win at Liverpool. I felt like it was a typical setup for a moving day today. "It's kind of a dream come true just to have the opportunity".

Woods feels the same way.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth put himself in with a chance of winning back-to-back Open Championships as he hit the front after the third round at Carnoustie, on a day when Tiger Woods re-emerged as a major force.

He didn't have the best score. He shot 72 and was in the group four behind. He owns more majors than any of the other princelings on the leaderboard, and seems intent on reestablishing the rule that had seemed impregnable when he lifted the Claret Jug four years ago. "I felt underprepared with everything that went on this week", he added, having shifted from the house to a hotel mid-way through the tournament.

"I think maybe a little bit tomorrow just to expect the unexpected".

On a day that was ideal for low scoring, Woods let rip with his driver and tucked into the birdie buffet with his red-hot putter, briefly grabbing a share of the lead - something the American had not done at a major since the 2013 Masters. He sent it bouncing and rolling along the firm turf, down a hill and onto the green to about 10 feet away for an eagle. But they've got two dozen golfers between them, and both haven't quite had the game to give you the belief that they could make a charge.

It never stopped. Seven players had a share of the lead at one point.

The crowds were roaring, as Woods made some big putts and missed some narrowly and the ball once stopped right at the lip with just half a roll needed for it to drop into the hole.

They were at 9-under 204.

England's Justin Rose is a shot behind Woods after earlier equalling the lowest score in an Open at Carnoustie with a brilliant 64. However, with only six shots separating the top 27 and a westerly wind expected to blow, Spieth is taking nothing for granted. Fleetwood, the top player on the European Tour past year, put together the best round of the week at Carnoustie with a 65.

Woods started quietly enough with a few birdies through eight holes.

Woods claimed not to have noticed he had spent about 20 minutes atop the board. But it was there.

A bogey at the par-3 16th stalled the momentum, and Woods had to scramble for a par at the last after landing his drive on the bank of the Barry Burn and into the deep rough. He figured it would at least keep him in range.

Nevertheless, the 2013 U.S. Open champion was delighted with his day's work.

"I'm playing golf for me now". "I was just trying to soak everything in, and I was just so grateful to be here".

Spieth, Schauffele and Kisner are two shots ahead of Kevin Chappell, who is in sole possession of fourth place after shooting a 67 on Saturday.

That said, the closest challengers include major winners Zach Johnson, Webb Simpson and Rory McIlroy at -5.

The shot came out hot and right at them.

Spieth started the day three off the lead held by Kisner and Zach Johnson but wasted no time in closing the gap by almost driving the green at the opening hole, then sinking an eagle putt from 12 feet.

A total of 19 players are within five shots of the lead, setting the stage for a stunning finale.

Jul 21, 2018; Carnoustie, SCT; Xander Schauffele plays his shot from the 17th tee during the third round of The Open Championship golf tournament at Carnoustie Golf Links.
