Unlike straws, the new lid can be recycled, the company said.

In a move meant to cut back on waste, the global coffee giant said Monday that it would eliminate plastic straws from its more than 28,000 locations globally by 2020.

Starbucks will begin rolling out the new lids for all drinks this fall, starting with stores in Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle.

Starbucks designed, developed and manufactured a strawless lid, which will become the standard for all iced coffee, tea and espresso beverages.

"This move is an answer to our own partners about what we can do to reduce the need for straws", said Colleen Chapman, vice president of Starbucks global social impact overseeing sustainability.

McDonald's also recently said it would switch to paper straws in the United Kingdom and Ireland by next year, and test alternatives to plastic straws in some USA locations. Ice-blended Frappuccinos, meanwhile, will be served with straws made of paper or compostable plastic.

Starbucks predicts that it will eliminate more than 1 billion straws yearly.

Anti-straw activists often suggest using straws made of paper, metal or glass - or simply drinking without one.
