Ryanair cancels 30 flights as pilots strike in Ireland

The airline has said it "expects limited disruption" in addition to the cancelled flights.

Scheduled flights between Ireland and the United Kingdom will face the brunt of the action, as Ryanair faces its second strike since recognising unions for the first time in December.

The airline has said only Ireland-UK flights are affected.

It continued: "Ryanair offered its pilots and Forsa to set up a working group to explain and negotiate any issues arising from Ryanair's written proposals on recognition, seniority, base transfers and new annual leave system, but regrettably agreement on this sensible course of action wasn't possible after seven hours of talks".

The cancellations are all on high frequency routes between Ireland and United Kingdom destinations including London, where passengers can easily switch to alternative flights.

"All customers on these flights have received text and email notification of these cancellations earlier today and our Customer Service teams are assisting them with refunds, free transfers to alternative flights on Thurs, or Wed, Fri and Saturday".

The airline has apologised for the "regrettable disruptions", saying it was trying to minimise the strike's impact on people travelling to Portugal, France, Spain, Italy and Greece.

"We will do this by cancelling a number of flights on high-frequency routes from Ireland to London and other United Kingdom province destinations where customers can transfer readily to other flights on Thurs or switch their travel to Friday, Saturday or subsequent days".

The IALPA ballot of those directly employed by Ryanair resulted in overwhelming support - 99% - for action, although Ryanair says this only represents 27% of its workforce in the Republic of Ireland.

Ryanair is facing its first day of industrial action in Ireland since the airline bowed to pressure from staff and recognised trades unions. Belgian, Portuguese and Spanish cabin crews are to strike on 25 and 26 July.

The airline has said it "cannot rule out further disruptions in July and August".
