Pride in London has apologized after being heavily criticized for allowing a small anti-trans group of women to lead the parade on Saturday. Who are they and what do they stand for?

A Get The L Out spokeswoman said: "We protested to protect our rights and on behalf of all the lesbians intimidated, threatened and silenced by the GBT community everywhere". They started demanding that activists take the "T" out of "LGBT", but settled for opting out themselves, demanding the "L" be removed. The petition was signed by just 310 people.

Ten women from the anti-trans group appeared at the front of the parade carrying banners saying "transactivism erases lesbians" and describing the trans movement as "anti-lesbianism".

The group argues the trans movement is attacking lesbian rights and said it protested to protect those rights.

It comes after anti-trans protesters lay on the ground at the front of the 30,000 strong march in London until officials persuaded them to move on.

The group also makes the claim that publications slur lesbians by using the word "terf" and "cis". Cisgendered people are those whose outward gender expression matches the sex they were assigned at birth by their parents and medical professions.

Police and security did not intervene, and the event organisers, Pride in London, said they allowed the group to stay where they were because of the hot weather and concerns over safety.

Brighton organisers said they would take "robust action against any hijacking" of the Brighton parade.

Pride apologized for the "disgusting" behavior by the protest group and said in a statement: "The protest group showed a level of bigotry, ignorance and hate that is unacceptable". Trans people deserved to see swift action in the removal of the protestors, vocal support from cisgender allies and a statement from Pride in London that was clear in its denunciation of the protest.
