Plea to help more than a dozen 'drunk' gulls along south coast

Firefighters were called to one gull behaving erratically on a roof before falling off in Lyme Regis Dorset Drunk seagulls taken to RSPCA centres after 'drinking discarded alcohol on beach'

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has received a number of complaints about seemingly drunk seagulls vomiting and failing to walk straight around the beaches of Devon, Dorset and Somerset - and officials from the charity are pinning the blame on local breweries for getting them soused.

Other sources report that the seagulls' freaky behaviour could be nothing to do with alcohol, but instead the consumption of flying ants which produce formic acid, a substance that "stupefies" the birds.

The charity is urging local alcohol producers, distilleries and breweries to check their waste is secure and that it can not be accessed by wildlife.

"The birds appear disoriented and confused and struggle to stand", explained RSPCA vet David Couper.

Anyone with concerns for a bird or animal should contact their local vet or get in touch with the RSPCA's 24-hour hotline on 0300 1234 999.

The animal welfare charity has had more than a dozen similar reports from the south coast.

Several birds who reportedly stunk of alcohol have been brought into multiple RSPCA centers for treatment and were released after a few days of care.

He said they have had gulls coming in from all over Devon as well as Lyme Regis and Bridport in Dorset.

However, most of the birds seem to recover after vomiting, she said.

"We took some video of one of the birds who is staggering around and losing his balance just like a person would if they'd had too much to drink".

Another is that the greedy gulls have scoffed grain by-products from a brewery in the area.
