University of Louisville President Neeli Bendapudi has announced the university is renaming its football stadium to "Cardinal Stadium", removing the Papa John's sponsorship.

Six MLB teams have suspended relationships with Papa John's since the admission of founder John Schnatter's use of the N-word on a conference call.

Bendapudi also explained she spoke with Schnatter, who supported the decision to remove the name so it won't be a distraction to the program, according to 93.9 The Ville.

Now that he's not the chairman of the board of the company he founded, Schnatter's face is disappearing from all of Papa John's marketing materials. Schnatter also stepped down as chairman of the pizza chain's board of directors late Wednesday night.

Schnatter submitted his resignation Wednesday as a member of the university's board of trustees after Louisville National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) called for Schnatter to either step down or be removed from the board, according to the Courier-Journal.

"Regardless of the context, I apologize", the statement said. "This is our best decision".

And Major League Baseball has indefinitely suspended its "Papa Slam" promotion with Papa John's, Yahoo Sports reported. That prompted the company's stock to recover some of the losses it suffered after the report, and shares climbed another 3 percent Friday.

Papa John's, which has had founder John Schnatter at the centre of its logo and in TV ads, plans to pull his image from its marketing after reports he used a racial slur.

Friday's decision did not touch on UofL's ties with Papa John's as a company, including an exclusive deal that allows only Papa John's pizza to be sold in the stadium.

Schnatter also reportedly said that when he was growing up in IN, people would drag black people from trucks until they died.

Built in the late 1990s, the football stadium was financed with $20 million in donations from Schnatter and his company - $14 million in personal gifts and $6 million from Papa John's global, according to a pair of naming rights agreements and extensions obtained by WDRB.
