Simon had an early break in the fourth set, but Del Potro hit back and was on the verge of victory until the Frenchman saved four match points to take it to another tie-break.

"It wasn't good for me because I didn't want to finish the match like that", Del Potro said.

With world number one Rafael Nadal waiting for the victor, Tuesday's fourth set, played in much cooler conditions than the first three the day before, turned into a mini-epic before Del Potro eventually prevailed 7-6 (1) 7-6 (5) 5-7 7-6 (5).

Del Potro looked flat as he was broken to trail 3-1 but he clawed his way back to lead 5-4 with his serve to come.

He eventually finished off world number 53 Simon in the match's third tiebreak to move into his second Wimbledon quarter-final where twice champion Nadal is waiting.

Del Potro was thrashed by the Spaniard in the French Open semi-final last month but feels his game matches up better against the world number one on grass despite losing their only two meetings on the surface. I tried to resist and maintain focus.

Djokovic enters eighth Wimbledon semi-final Nadal triumphed 7-5, 6-7 (7/9), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 after four hours and 48 minutes to reach his sixth Wimbledon semi-final and 28th at the majors.

Nadal carved out the crucial break in the opening set for a 6-5 lead and claimed the opener off a Del Potro backhand error.

The action continued to roll in on the Del Potro serve and it was Nadal's turn to slip flat onto his back but he picked himself up and rasped a backhand victor to snatch the crucial break.

The final near-five-hour match on Centre Court brought about the end of a fabulous day of tennis action. My body feels okay.

"But Rafa cames to me and we made a big hug, and it was kind of him".
