The research team performed a meta-analysis, putting together the results from 18 individual published studies, including randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies.
There's another study suggesting that the vitamin and mineral supplements bought by millions of Americans do nothing to stave off heart disease.
Multivitamins and minerals were defined by the authors as dietary supplements containing greater than three vitamin and mineral ingredients. That is especially true of supplement users living in Europe and Japan.
Researchers say there's no evidence vitamins, or mineral supplements reduce the risk of heart attacks, heart disease deaths, or strokes.
Victoria Taylor, senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation, said: "We know that eating a healthy balanced diet, like the traditional Mediterranean diet, can help to lower our risk of heart and circulatory diseases".
Study lead author Dr. Joonseok Kim is an assistant professor of Cardiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. They found no association between taking multivitamin and mineral supplements and a lower risk of death from cardiovascular diseases. Instead, those concerned about their cardiovascular health should focus on "something that is proven to improve cardiovascular outcomes, such as fruit and vegetable intake and exercise".

For now, Kim said the best he can hope for is that the findings resonate with the Americans who spend an estimated $5.7 billion a year on multivitamins because they mistakenly think theyre improving their health. And because dietary supplements arent regulated the same as drugs, they dont have to be proven safe or effective before making their way to store shelves.
In CRN's response, the association's senior vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs, Duffy MacKay, ND, said that "the findings of this new meta-analysis do not discount the multivitamin's many benefits".
It is also in agreement with the results of a recent study conducted by David Jenkins and colleagues from the University of Toronto in Canada, which showed that the most commonly used supplements have no consistent benefits in reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and premature death. "These include a heart-healthy diet, exercise, tobacco cessation, controlling blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels, and when needed, medical treatment".
In response, the Council on Responsible Nutrition, a supplement trade group, said, "multivitamins fill nutrient gaps in our less-than-perfect diets" and "are not meant to serve as magic bullets".
