All 12 defendants are members of the GRU, a Russian federation intelligence agency within the main intelligence directorate of the Russian military, who were acting in "their official capacities".

Special counsel Robert Mueller has indicted a dozen Russian intelligence officers in his probe into the Kremlin's meddling in the 2016 presidential election, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced Friday.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said there was sufficient evidence to present the charges to a grand jury.

They allegedly did this, Rosenstein said, by spearphishing volunteers and employees of Hillary Clinton's campaign, and were able to steal usernames and passwords, eventually hacking into the networks of the Democratic National Campaign Committee and Democratic National Committee.

Trump, meanwhile, has been criticized for being reluctant to speak publicly about Russian interference into the campaign. "One of those defendants, and a twelfth Russian officer, are charged with conspiring to infiltrate computers of organizations responsible for administering elections, including state boards of election, secretaries of state, and companies that supply software and other technology used to administer elections". They are accused of releasing the stolen emails on a website, dcleaks.com. Rosenstein added that he had briefed President Donald Trump on the indictment earlier this week.

"It's important not to think as Republicans or Democrats, but patriotically as Americans", he said.

While Friday's indictment does not include any criminal allegations against a USA citizen, the charges note that Guccifer 2.0 allegedly communicated with "U.S. persons about the release of stolen documents".

They corresponded with 'several Americans, ' he said, but the DOJ is not alleging htat any of them knew they were talking with Russian agents.

President Trump told reporters a few few hours before Rosenstein spoke that he plans to bring up Russia's election interference campaign Monday with President Vladimir Putin when they meet in Helsinki, Finland.
