What could be the effects their moms have.
In a country where about 1 out of 5 children under 19 years old are obese - according to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention -, the experts made a decision to investigate what was making that number so high. This percentage is about 1 in every 5 children. Almost 1 in 5 children in the U.S. younger than 19 has a body mass index defined as obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The researchers said these findings show the impact a mother's lifestyle choices can have on her children's health, and the need for family- or parent-based approaches to reduce childhood obesity.
The risk of obesity was also lower among children of mothers' who consumed low or moderate levels of alcohol compared with children of mothers who abstained from alcohol.
The study examined the medical history and lifestyles of more than 24,000 children aged nine to 14, born to nearly 17,000 women in the US. All of the women filled up questionnaires about their lifestyles, including data related to the five habits previously mentioned.
The U.S.is in the midst of an obesity epidemic, and as such this research could have important implications for how it is tackled.

It is not a matter to consider that what a mother ate when she was pregnant as a maternal diet alone is not responsible for the obesity.
To the surprise of the researchers, mothers' dietary patterns were not associated with obesity in their children, possibly because children's diets are influenced by many factors, including school lunches and available food options in their neighborhoods. What children eat at school also gets a chance of affecting the diet of children. It also relied on self-reported data about mums' habits, and self-reported data is notoriously unreliable - though the researchers nevertheless emphasised the importance of mothers in preventing children from becoming obese.
