Monstrous iceberg seen breaking off Greenland glacier

Dramatic Video Captures Moment Towering Iceberg Splits from Greenland Glacier Scientists capture breaking of glacier in Greenland

A team of scientists from New York University caught a stunning sight on video when they witnessed an iceberg breaking away from a glacier. Scientists have closely followed the frozen river as a key indicator of global warming and sea level rise.

"Global sea-level rise is both undeniable and consequential", says David Holland, the leader of the research team and a professor at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematics.

The calving event captured on video began on June 22 at 11:30 p.m. local time and took place over approximately 30 minutes (the video has condensed the time of this occurrence to approximately 90 seconds).

The team was observing the edge of the Helheim Glacier, one of Greenland's largest outlet glaciers and the fastest flowing glacier along the eastern edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet. - "Catching as it unfolds, we can see its value".

Alarming footage shows a four-mile-long iceberg breaking off a glacier in Greenland in the latest example of the devastating effects of climate change.

The resulting iceberg, broken off from Greenland's Helheim Glacier, would stretch from lower Manhattan up to Midtown in New York City.

The video shows a tabular (wide and flat) iceberg separate, then travel down the fjord where it smashes into another iceberg.

News of rising sea levels and temperatures have become so common in headlines and reports, it is possible that the general public is becoming desensitised to it all.

The research team at NYU is examining the forces behind sea-level rise under a grant from the National Science Foundation. Hopefully, it will help researchers further understand the causes of sea-level rise around the world.

In 2017, experts predicted the collapse of the entire Western Antarctic Ice Sheet would result in a 10-foot-rise in sea level. Apart from the large chunk thin and tall icebergs known as pinnacle bergs also drift out to sea. Such events could help researchers understand how glaciers will respond to natural variability and human-induced changes.
