May's new cabinet meet amid chaos as Gove backs PM

His resignation was warmly welcomed by hardline Eurosceptics in the Tory ranks who were already expressing reservations about Mrs May's leadership after her Cabinet agreed a plan which would keep the United Kingdom closely tied to Brussels.

Johnson said in his letter that May's plan to keep close economic ties with the bloc means Britain is heading for a "semi Brexit" that would leave Britain with the "status of a colony" of the EU.

Boris Johnson has resigned as the British foreign secretary, according to several media reports.

Both have warned they will lose their seats unless the Tories deliver Brexit.

He said many MPs saw Mr Johnson's resignation as a "selfish act".

Mr Johnson went on; "On Friday, I acknowledged that my side of the argument were too few to prevail and congratulated you on at least reaching a Cabinet decision on the way forward".

May has faced a backlash over the plan from Brexit hardliners in her Conservative Party who say it gives too many concessions to the European Union, but she has support from moderates and there has been no challenge to her leadership.

Brexiteer Walsall North MP Eddie Hughes is one of a number of Tory backbenchers to have voiced concerns over the detail of Mrs May's Brexit deal, with the full 120-page version not due to be released until Thursday.

Under Conservative party rules, 48 MPs need to send a letter to Graham Brady, chair of the backbench 1922 Committee, calling for a contest.

The ex-Foreign Secretary left the foreign secretary's official residence at Carlton Gardens, central London, late in the evening, accompanied by his wife Marina Wheeler, and without speaking to waiting reporters.

"What the Prime Minister needs to do is to give up on the Chequers proposal. which does not actually deliver Brexit", he told LBC Radio.

Boris Johnson and David Davis inflicted major blows on the government by quitting in protest at the "weak" blueprint, warning that they offered too many concessions.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson backed the proposals at Chequers, despite claiming that defending the plans was like "polishing a turd" during the meeting.

In March 2017, some 54% trusted her to get the best Brexit deal possible and just 33% did not trust her.

Mrs May however appears to have lived to fight another day, with no vote of no confidence tabled by her MPs.

"This is the Brexit that is in our national interest".

Just 48 hours ago, the former Vote Leave leader's position was that while May's customs plan, which would keep us bound by European Union rules in perpetuity, was a "turd", he was still willing to sell it.
