Mavericks decline Dirk Nowitzki's option, plan to re-sign

Dallas Mavericks Working On DeAndre Jordan Trade: Report DeAndre Jordan declines his option, essentially ending tenure with Clippers
Cassandra Castillo | 01 July, 2018, 05:54

In 2017-18, Jordan averaged 12 points and 15.2 rebounds per game.

The last time Jordan was a free agent, in 2015, the three-time All-NBA standout re-signed with the Clippers after an intense back-and-forth between the Clippers and Mavericks.

In 2011, the Dubs signed Jordan-then a restricted free agent-to a four-year, $43 million offer sheet that the Clippers matched. In the eleventh hour, though, his Clippers teammates convinced him to stay in Los Angeles.

Jordan will fill a big need for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks are hopeful of finally landing him after he famously reneged on a deal with them in 2015 and was convinced to stay in Los Angeles in one of the most freaky free agency sagas in National Basketball Association history. Jordan, who grew up in the Houston area and played one season at Texas A&M, might end up taking a little less next season than he was going to make in exchange for the security of multiple years.

The move was reportedly a mutual decision, with Nowitzki expected to re-sign in July after the team's pursuits in free agency are complete. The Mavs have created a massive amount of cap space for the center.

The German big man told the team's official website in May that he wouldn't rule out playing the 2019-20 campaign either, as he plans to take it year-by-year.

Free agency officially begins on Monday (AEST).

If the Clippers are active starting Saturday, most likely they'll be in search of forwards.

Rivers might not be the last guard to depart the Clippers, though.

Only $2.1 million of Teodosic's $6.3-million contract for 2018-19 is guaranteed.
