But Anderson has little time to rest his aching body before facing Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal in Sunday's final. The 50-game final set took about three hours alone.

Melichar and Peschke will play the victor of the second semifinal between No. 3 seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic and the unseeded pair of Alicja Rosolska of Poland and Abigail Spears of the U.S. Because of the length of the first match, that semifinal will be played with the roof closed.

Isner was serving first, with Anderson then having to hold each time in order to stay alive in the match.

The match could not end due to a quirk of Wimbledon and two of the other Grand Slams - the fifth set cannot end in a tiebreaker.

John Isner and Kevin Anderson possess two of the most powerful serves in tennis, and simply could not find a break in their Wimbledon semifinal.

This put the 32-year-old Anderson in a good spot as Federer was not playing on his favourite Centre Court.

That service hold - helped by a 129 miles per hour (207.6km/h) second serve - took the American to 100 service games unbroken at this Wimbledon.

Anderson took a medical timeout after the third set.

It was a similar tale in the fourth set where the South African broke for 3-2 only to hand the break straight back. Isner in particularly started to appear worn out at the set wore on. He would go on to break the big American and then served out the match.

It's his second showpiece appearance in four major tournaments after his runner-up finish in last year's US Open. Anderson finally earned the must-have, go-ahead service break with the help of a point in which the right-hander tumbled to his backside, scrambled back to his feet and hit a shot lefty. Djokovic owns 12 Slam trophies, three from Wimbledon.
