Line-call controversy mars Dominika Cibulkova’s progress to quarter-finals

Tennis: Cibulkova slams Wimbledon officials over call row Dominika Cibulkova blasts Wimbledon umpire after controversy in fourth-round win
Cassandra Castillo | 10 July, 2018, 20:11

The umpire awarded the point to Cibulkova, even though Hsieh had actually scrambled her return back.

The Slovakian won 6-4 6-1 but the match will be remembered for a ludicrous umpiring decision at a crucial stage of a tight opening set.

Hsieh held her ground and called for the supervisor, while Cibulkova stood on the baseline, in the ad-court, waiting for the next point.

When asked if she had any sympathy with Hsieh for her feeling of injustice, she added: 'This happened to me so many times that I had exact the same point, and the point was given to the other player.

"It never happened to me that the umpire changed the decision", Cibulkova said.

After seven minutes, the decision was finally changed and the point replayed. It was all wrong, I think.

Cibulková did her best to try and hang on, but the Slovakian was left chasing shadows as Ostapenko blasted a backhand victor on her first match point to reach the last four without dropping a set in this year's tournament. Is it my fault you don't remember if she hit the net or if she put it on my side?

Ironically, Cibulkova's surge to the last eight has her sitting at the top of the draw, usually the domain of the No 1. "After [Hsieh] was complaining, they were talking in Chinese, whatever language, I don't know".

"It really messed with me, then I tried to just calm down, to play my game". "So I just started to play better". When I feel like this is something that should not happen, I would be maybe sympathy with her.

Cibulkova, ranked No 32 in the world, was not awarded a Wimbledon seed because the All England Club committee wanted to hand Williams, who returned from giving birth to her first child at the beginning of the year, the privilege.

Hsieh insisted she was right to demand the call be over-turned.

Although Cibulkova complained about the decision, the former Australian Open finalist has refocused well enough to make her third Wimbledon quarter-final.

And of the umpire, she added: "Maybe she's exhausted and she doesn't see the ball". "It's quite common, because even player on the court sometimes get exhausted and don't see something, it's normal".
