Third when the Tour last visited the climb dubbed "The Breton Alpe d'Huez" in 2015, UAE Team Emirates rider Martin made his move early, dancing clear of the field ahead of the kilometre-to-go banner before holding off a strong challenge from Frenchman Pierre Latour (Ag2R-La Mondiale) to claim only the second Tour stage win of his career and the first since 2013. Alejandro Valverde of Team Movistar finished in 3rd. I had really good legs and when I went my legs kept coming and coming, " Martin said. "I thought, why not have a try?"

"I attacked as hard as I could".

Stage victor Ireland's Daniel Martin celebrates on the podium after the sixth stage of the Tour de France.

Porte sits in 11th spot on the general classification 53 seconds behind his teammate, Belgian Greg van Avermaet, who is clinging on to the yellow jersey, three seconds ahead of Team Sky's Thomas.

Great French hope Romain Bardet (Ag2r) and last year's Giro d'Italia victor Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) were the biggest losers among the overall favourites, losing 31 seconds and 53 seconds respectively.

A breakaway group of five riders - Laurent Pichon (Fortuneo-Samsic), Anthony Turgis (Cofidis), Dion Smith (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Damien Gaudin and Fabien Grellier (both Direct Energie) - hit the front from the off and built a gap of nearly seven minutes before it stabalised.

Gaudin attacked following the intermediate sprint and was out on his own with 40km remaining.

France's Romain Bardet Bardet trails the leader's pace by 1:45 after he broke his back wheel during the sixth stage of the Tour de France.

The breakaway group were then caught by the peleton at the start of the 2km climb, won by Toms Skujins, the wearer of the polka dot jersery. Bauer led at the bonus point stage and picked up three seconds.

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas was part of a group three seconds behind but climbed to second overall after securing two bonus seconds during the stage.

Ireland's Daniel Martin is all smiles as he takes out stage six of the Tour de France. This sees the Dutchman concede 1 minute 13 seconds to stage victor Dan Martin (UAE-Team Emirates) and over a minute to his other General Classification rivals.
