Iran cements ‘strategic relationship’ with Russian Federation

He said that after the US' withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was a strategic mistake made by the U.S. president, the Islamic Republic of Iran chose to send special envoys to convey the messages of top Iranian leaders to other countries.

Ali Akbar Velayati, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's top adviser on worldwide affairs, smiles as he listens to questions from the media during a news conference after meeting with Lebanon's Prime Minister Tammam Salam at the government palace in Beirut May 18, 2015.

Argentina is now considering whether it will register a formal diplomatic complaint to the Russians following Velayati's non-arrest, although the government is said to be nervous about increasing any tensions with Moscow.

Velayati told Iranian state television from Moscow that Khamenei "values improving ties with Russian Federation as a strategic partner" and that Moscow was "prepared to invest in Iran's oil sector".

Speaking to reporters upon arrival in Moscow on Wednesday, Velayati lauded the "strategic" relations between Tehran and Moscow, expressing hope that his visit would be a turning point in bilateral ties. Asked about Netanyahu's visit, Velayati said: "His presence or absence in Russian Federation has no effect on our strategic mission in Moscow".

The Russian head of state also hailed the achievements of the Iran-Russia cooperation in the war against terrorism.

Velayati is among special envoys that Iran is sending to various countries in response to the United States withdrawal earlier this year from the 2015 nuclear deal.

Trump also said he planned to reinstate United States nuclear sanctions on Iran and impose "the highest level" of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian presence in Syria is expected to be on the agenda of a July 16 meeting in Helsinki between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Facing revived sanctions from the United States and the possible knock-on collapse of its business dealings with Europe, Iran is looking to Russian Federation and China for investment and to purchase its oil.

In a meeting in Tehran with Putin last November, Ayatollah Khamenei praised Iran-Russia cooperation in the fight against Takfiri terrorists in Syria, stressing that the solution of the Syria crisis requires continued cooperation between the two countries.

Tehran has conditioned its stay in the deal to practical European strides to make sure Iran's dividends from the deal would not be affected when USA sanctions "snap back" in August.
