Ranger John Burke told Sunrise crocodiles removed from the river system were on average about 4.2 metres long.

"We've called it a lot of things over the years because it's been so hard to catch".

"But you've also got to admire the size of the animal and how old it is".

Rangers had been on the lookout for the giant creature since it was first seen almost 10 years ago.

The Washington Post reports the near decade-long hunt for the croc known as "big fella" ended after rangers set a trap in the Katherine River last week.

Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife said it had trapped the 600-kilogram (1,300-pound) reptile on Monday more than 300 kilometers (185 miles) from the ocean and only 30 kilometers (19 miles) downstream from Katherine Gorge, a major tourist attraction outside the Northern Territory town of Katherine.

The post included a photo showing the crocodile tied down on a trailer with duct tape around its jaw.

So far this year, 187 of them have been captured in the Top End - the northernmost part of the Northern Territory, according to the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife website, which advises visitors to be "crocwise".

"He has been taken to a croc farm in the Katherine region".

There are an estimated 100,000 saltwater crocodiles in Australia's Northern Territory. This year, 190 have been captured. Crocodiles are farmed for their meat and hides, but large and battle-scarred crocs are usually unsuitable for the handbag market.

The crocodile population has exploded since they were declared a protected species in the 1970s, with the killing of an elderly woman past year reigniting calls to curb their numbers.
