House Republicans face off with Federal Bureau of Investigation agent at raucous hearing

The talk show host let highlights of the Capitol Hill testimony provide the jokes for him.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) reminded Strzok that it took him one day after Robert Mueller was appointed special counsel into the investigation of President Trump's campaign and Russian officials before the FBI agent talked about impeachment proceedings.

The hearing exposed clear partisan divides in the House judiciary and oversight committees, as Democrats accused Republicans of trying to divert attention from Trump's ties to Russian Federation through an excessive focus on Strzok.

Questioned by Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, Strzok became the first FBI or Department of Justice official to admit that Bruce Ohr, whose wife Nellie Ohr was hired by Fusion GPS to conduct opposition research against then-candidate Donald Trump, supplied the FBI with documents related to the Russian Federation counterintelligence investigation.

Goodlatte told Strzok he could answer, though Gohmert was visibly displeased.

"To my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, please replace President Trump's name with your own name in a small sample of things Mr. Strzok has said", he said.

Strzok testified Thursday that his texts "have created confusion and caused pain for people I love" and "have provided ammunition for misguided attacks against the Federal Bureau of Investigation, an institution I love deeply and have served proudly for more than 20 years".

"Congressman, I have to say that I was looking forward to this".

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will meet with Trump in Helsinki on Monday, has repeatedly denied US intelligence agency conclusions that Moscow interfered in the campaign and tried to help Trump.

As soon as the questions got underway, the hearing devolved into a partisan verbal brawl as House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte struggled to maintain control of the crowded hearing room, which contained more than 70 members between the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees.

Strzok endured roughly 11 hours of testimony before House lawmakers Thursday, with many Republicans focusing on his text of "we'll stop it" in reference to Trump's campaign.

"At no time in any of these texts did those personal beliefs ever enter into the realm of any action I took", Strzok continued.

"They would not tolerate any improper behavior in me anymore than I would tolerate it in them", Strzok said.

Strzok said on Thursday that the "we" in the text referred to the American people because he believed Trump would not win the election after criticizing families whose relatives had been killed while serving in the USA military. Both Strzok and Page were booted from Mueller's investigation past year after he discovered their texts.

In his opening statement, Strzok said he has never allowed personal opinions to infect his work, that he knew information during the campaign that had the potential to damage Trump but never contemplated leaking it and that the focus put on him by Congress is misguided and plays into "our enemies' campaign to tear America apart".

FBI Director Chris Wray has said employees who were singled out for criticism by the inspector general have been referred to internal disciplinary officials.

Top Republicans are still at odds with the Justice Department and FBI over a series of sensitive document requests for information related to the investigations, and some conservatives have threatened to hold Rosenstein in contempt of Congress or even try to impeach him over the standoff.
