It said Athens accuses them of having tried to influence the northeastern monastic community of Mount Athos - known for its fierce patriotism - as well as local authorities in the north of the country to launch demonstrations against the agreement with Skopje.

The Greek government has accused the Russian officials of acting to obtain and distribute sensitive information. The sources added that Greece had been cautious about relations with Russia, particularly refraining from following the example of many Western states that had expelled Russian diplomats in the wake of the Skripal incident - a decision welcomed by the Russian leadership.

Greece has chose to expel two Russian diplomats for allegedly intervening in the name dispute agreement between Athens and Skopje.

She added that unlike many other European Union countries, Greece did not expel any Russian diplomats following the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy in Britain, which London blamed on Moscow.

They point to the effort by Russian Federation to intervene in a sensitive domestic issue like the agreement between Greece and FYROM over the name, and by doing so negatively affect Greece's role in the Balkans. Moscow always takes tit-for-tat measures in response to diplomat expulsions, an official at the Russian Foreign Ministry told reporters, commenting on media reports about the expulsion of two Russian diplomats from Greece.

Greece's Kathimerini newspaper said Athens authorities ordered the expulsions after suspected attempts by the Russian diplomats to undermine an agreement Greece brokered with the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia last month which ended a decades-old diplomatic standoff over its name.

The same sources note that despite the efforts by the Greek government to keep relations with Russia on a good level, lately various circles that are connected to Russian interests have been meddling in Greek domestic affairs.

However, Greece was not among them. Two Britons were also later poisoned by the nerve agent and one has died.
