After renting the auto, MacKay said the woman drove three or four minutes to the local Walmart where she did some grocery shopping.

The woman, a local herself, wasn't a repentant vehicle thief, but merely confused and possibly in a rush on the day she rented a auto - a black Nissan Sentra - and drove straight to Walmart to do a little shopping.

What started out as a routine auto rental turned into a lesson about the importance of not leaving electronic key fobs in unoccupied vehicles, according to police in Cornwall, Ont. Upon exiting the store, she climbed in a black Nissan - the vehicle was open and the key's were in the ignition - and drove home. According to police, she complained to the manager about the state of the vehicle, saying that the inside was poorly cleaned and that there was a set of golf clubs left in the auto.

Though police say there was a "happy and amusing ending to this story", they say it serves as a flawless reminder not to leave key fobs in unattended vehicles.

This allowed the woman to drive off, completely unaware that it wasn't her rental. The man whose auto was stolen found the entire thing hilarious, and gave a healthy "chuckle" when his vehicle was returned to him.

"In conversation with the manager of that establishment it came out that he was the owner of a black Infiniti that was recently stolen", MacKay said.

The first hint of the swap came last weekend, when she attempted to return the auto to the rental company.

Two weeks later, when the woman tried to return that very same vehicle, the manager clued in.

The woman - who police described as being "confused and a wee bit embarrassed herself" - contacted police, explaining that she had accidentally taken an Infinity and driven around in it for two weeks. The manager looked at the Infiniti keys and told her that it wasn't the original vehicle she rented. For one, it was messy when she picked it up - and there was a set of golf clubs in the trunk. "And she was giving the manager the business on renting her a dirty vehicle", MacKay said. After they realized what had happened, the first thing they did was call the police.

And that's not even where the story ends.

At this time, the owner of the Infiniti returned to the parking lot and discovered his auto was missing, to which he reported it stolen to local police.
