Fifth boy rescued from cave, Thai officials confirm

4 Boys Freed From Thailand Cave as Rescue Mission Begins Thai Navy SEALs use Facebook for nail-biting updates on cave rescue mission

"They will be kept away from their parents for a while because we are concerned about infections", Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said at a news conference about the boys who were rescued on Sunday.

Four of the 12 boys were extracted from the Tham Luang cave network in the Chiang Rai province Sunday evening, before the operation was suspended overnight to allow oxygen tanks to be refilled before rescue teams begin the next phase. Four boys were taken out of the cave by divers on Sunday.

Australian Federal Police and Defense Force divers, along with Australian cave diver and anesthetist Richard Harris, 53, are part of the team continuing to work on extracting the remaining members of the team.

Thirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit guided the boys to safety through narrow, submerged passageways that claimed the life of a former Thai navy diver on Friday.

The rain raises concerns that rising floodwaters in the cave complex will complicate rescue efforts and affect the evacuation.

The operation began at 10 a.m. local time and went faster than initially expected, but did not confirm which boys were rescued.

Narongsak earlier cited favorable factors for successful rescue, including the fact that water levels in the cave remain stable amid the current break in the weather, even as the monsoon season looms. Dr. Ashton said the boys are possibly weak from lack of solid foods and from being sedentary on a small beach inside the cave where most remain marooned.

Nopparat, the team's head coach, said that Ekapol would often bring the boys to and from their homes when their parents could not, saying, "He gave a lot of himself to them".

"This morning they said they are hungry, and they wanted phad kra pao", he said.

"We hope to hear good news soon", Osotthanakorn said.

The boys had to travel about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) with oxygen tanks, tethered to cave divers to exit.

All preparations, including replacing the oxygen cylinders positioned along the route out in the cave, take at least 20 hours, he said.

Having completed this section, the boys are then handed over to separate, specialist rescue teams, who help assist them through the remainder of the caves, much of which they can wade through.

"If Phra Pirun helps us, we might be able to do it very quickly", Narongsak said, again invoking the god of rain, who is widely revered in Thailand.

The president of soccer's governing body, FIFA, has invited the boys to the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday if they make it out in time.

"It is an extremely risky undertaking", Bill Whitehouse, vice-chairman of the British Cave Rescue Council, told AFP, adding "poor visibility in the water, tortuous passages to get through, constrictions" were some of the major obstacles divers face.

Sunday, July 8: Divers lead four of the boys out of the cave complex as night falls, sending them to the hospital. A Thai Navy SEAL commander told reporters he believed there was "a limited amount of time" left to rescue the soccer team.

Musk tweeted early Saturday that he was working with a team from his SpaceX rocket company to build a "tiny, kid-size submarine" to transport the children. I'm happy being here inside, the navy SEALS have taken good care.

"I am still waiting here at the cave, keeping my fingers crossed to see whether my son will be one of those to come out today", Supaluk Sompiengjai, a mother of Pheeraphat - known by his nickname "Night" - told AFP.
