‘Families Belong Together' Rally: Thousands protest family separations at border across country

New Yorkers join thousands across U.S. in protesting Trump’s immigration policy Thousands to take to the streets in nationwide protests against Trump’s family separation policy

The president is not in Washington over the weekend, but thousands braved the heat to protest the policy.

Trump later signed an order ending the separation of families but immigration lawyers say the process of reuniting children and their parents will be long and chaotic.

More than 700 planned marches drew hundreds of thousands of people across the country, from immigrant-friendly cities like NY and Los Angeles to conservative Appalachia and IN to the front lawn of a Border Patrol station IN McAllen, Texas, near a detention center where migrant children were being held IN cages.

Protesters from faith-based groups gathered inside the state Capitol to condemn Republican New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez's support for federal immigration policies Thursday in Santa Fe. Check back for updates throughout the day.

Faced with a barrage of criticism both at home and overseas, Mr Trump last week signed an executive order to halt the family separation practice, but made no specific provisions for those already split apart. "This is about children held in cages", she said.

Hodson said, "I am from Staunton".

Around the state, events are planned in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Columbus, Farmington, Gallup, Roswell, Santa Fe, Silver City, Socorro, Tierra Amarilla and Truth or Consequences.

The main rally is taking place in Lafayette Square in Washington, but hundreds of marches, protests and rallies were underway across the country to call for the immediate reunification of migrant families and an end to family detentions and separations.

As a result of Trump's crackdown, distraught children were separated from their families and, according to widely broadcast pictures, held in chain-link enclosures, a practice that sparked domestic and global outrage.

But the DOJ is zeroing in on the requirement, saying the order this week from U.S. District Court Judge Dana Sabraw requires that children's release be delayed so that they can stay with their parents.

For people on both sides of the political aisle, Saturday morning's demonstration was the aftermath of jarring images illustrating reality - children being separated from their families at the border and little indication on when they will be reunited.

"We care!" marchers shouted outside Dallas City Hall.

There are growing calls among Democrats to defund and disband the agency - a move Trump has vowed to block. "Now they're jailing families-and they haven't yet reunified the families already brutally torn apart", wrote the Families Belong Together coalition. "All the people want to do is work, earn a decent living".

"Honestly, I am blown away".

Some protesters said they were so aghast by Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy that they couldn't explain exactly how they felt. They were met by about 15 counter-protesters supporting the 45th president.
