Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been sworn in for another term as president of Turkey, inaugurating a new political system that grants the leader vast powers.

"In a telephone conversation with President Erdogan this evening, President Buhari expressed the hope that the results of the recently held elections will strengthen democracy and lead Turkey towards more economic prosperity", the statement read in part.

Marc Pierini, a former European Union ambassador to Turkey and visiting scholar at Carnegie Europe, said Erdogan's new powers would effectively make him a "super-executive president".

Erdogan would become both the head of state and government, with the prime minister's post abolished.

State television channel TRT broadcast Erdogan's described Monday's swearing-in as the "first day of the new Turkey".

More than 150,000 state employees have lost their jobs in the crackdown following the coup attempt, and Turkey's interior minister said in April that 77,000 have been formally charged and kept in jail during their trials.

He has also pledged to end the state of emergency that has been in place since the failed July 2016 coup and has seen the biggest purge in the history of modern Turkey.

Since taking office in 2003, first as prime minister and later as president, Erdogan has dominated Turkey, tightening his grip over the country of 81 million people as he tamed rival power centres including the military, which toppled some previous governments.

The currency has been battered by concern about Erdogan's drive for lower interest rates and comments he made in May saying he planned to take greater control of the economy after the June 24 elections. Erdoĝan has repeatedly clashed with strategic allies such as the U.S. and the European Union in recent years over the war in Syria, Turkey's accession to the EU, human rights abuses by Ankara, Europe's failure to support Turkey during the coup attempt, and rising Islamophobia in Europe. Ties with the United States and other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners also frayed, but Turkey remains crucial for any hope of stability in Syria and Iraq and managing refugee flows to Europe.

Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Saturday nominated Yildirim as parliament speaker, an appointment likely to be rubber-stamped by the chamber on Thursday.

The lira TRYTOM=D3, which is down some 16 percent so far this year, firmed to its highest level since mid-June before falling back to 4.61 against the dollar.
