The series, which had an ensemble cast led by Hugh Bonneville and Dame Maggie Smith, followed the many ups and downs of the Crawley family and their servants.

The outlet notes that "not every recurring character" will appear in the Downton Abbey film - which is understandable considering that the series' main, recurring character, and guest cast lists rival the size of Game of Thrones'.

The original cast will reunite for the film and series' creator Julian Fellowes has already penned the screenplay.

No, I'm not referring to "Gosford Park", the upstairs-downstairs movie that Julian Fellowes wrote years before he created "Downton Abbey". There was an announcement that the movie was supposed to start filming in September 2017, but it seems like this time, the show's producers mean it. Brian Percival, who directed the British upstairs/downstairs show's pilot, will direct the film.

Focus chairman Peter Kujawski added: "Since the series ended, fans of "Downton" have always been waiting for the Crawley family's next chapter".

We're finally getting that "Downton Abbey" movie that fans have long wanted.

Carnival Films and Focus Features have announced that shooting is set to take place this summer at Highclerc Castle, the 17th-century estate which served as the setting for the aristocratic Crawley family's titular home.

The series garnered numerous awards including a trio of Golden Globe Awards, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, a Special BAFTA award. "Julian's script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival's hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen". "Delighted to announce we're getting the band back together!" she tweeted, while Michelle Dockery also shared her joy online, saying that she was "thrilled to announce that #DowntonAbbey is coming to the big screen". Founded in 1978, Carnival's many shows include Poirot, Hotel Babylon, Whitechapel and Dracula, as well as award-winning mini-series such as Traffik, Any Human Heart, The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies and The Hollow Crown anthology.
