"This will remain the case until the Carbon dioxide supply returns to normal, but rest assured we are working really hard to keep our products on Britain's shelves".

The shortages are understood to have been caused by a longer than usual break in production of ammonia, one of the key sources of food grade Carbon dioxide in Europe - which is used to carbonate drinks and preserve some packed fresh foods.

Warburtons said it is working "really hard" to keep products on shelves, but admitted it is making "nowhere near" its usual amount of the British staple.

The British Retail Consortium said: "We are aware of specific pressures in some areas such as carbonated soft drinks, beer, British chicken and British pork but the majority of food products are unaffected and retailers do not anticipate food shortages".

Food wholesale Bookers, which sells drinks to restaurants and bars, has rationed the number of beers being sold to customers at 10, and the number of soft drinks or cider to five.

The shortage then started to become critical when other plants associated with bio-ethanol and chemical production were shut down for maintenance or for technical issues. "We are now working hard with our suppliers to minimise the impact for our customers".

It has been exacerbated by spikes in demand due to the World Cup and the hot weather.

The British Beer and Pub Association said 'Although stocks of bulk Carbon dioxide remain low, brewers across the country are working their socks off around the clock to ensure there is still plenty of beer to go around.

The beer is still flowing at pubs in Norfolk - though many have had to swap new drinks in depending on what is available.

The Association of Convenience Stores said local shops were not yet reporting problems with suppliers.

ICYMI, there is a shortage of carbon dioxide which is making it more hard to make loads of things, from beer to fizzy drinks to, now, the superior breakfast item.
