CDC recalls Del Monte vegetable trays

CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

The trays were purchased at various retailers including Kwik Trip or Kwik Star convenience stores. Those resulted in seven hospitalizations but no deaths. In the initial outbreak announcement on June 15, there were 78 people with confirmed parasitic infections.

The first person known to be infected became sick on May 14. The parasite can take days or weeks to pass through humans, so consumers may only recently be experiencing the illness. Similarly, the CDC's update did not reference a specific item from the trays, but it does appear to have strengthened its language regarding the outbreak.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it's partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local agencies to examine 212 confirmed cases of parasite-borne cyclosporiasis.

The CDC said those who were exposed to Cyclospora would have fallen ill between May 15 and June 11. The two cases from MI reportedly purchased the vegetable tray in Wisconsin and therefore MI is not impacted from this outbreak. They range in age from 13 to 79 years old.

A recall was also issued in mid-June for the Del Monte trays, which included baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and dill dip, and were labeled for sale by Jun 17.

'Consumers who believe that they are in possession of any of the above products affected by this recall should dispose of the product in an appropriate waste container, ' the FDA said.

The CDC is recalling a Del Monte vegetable tray sold at Kwik Trip and Kwik Star locations after there have been 212 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in people from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and MI. "The two cases from MI reportedly purchased the vegetable tray in Wisconsin and therefore MI is not impacted from this outbreak", said the FDA. "FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays; the investigation is ongoing", according to the FDA's update this week.

Cyclospora cayetanensis, the CDC noted, is a "single-celled parasite that causes an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis". Specific lab tests are required to diagnose the infection, which has symptoms that can be confused with other illnesses. Other common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue.

These symptoms may not necessarily persist the entire time a person remains infected with cyclosporiasis, and may seem to go away and then return one or more times, as a patient may relapse.
