Britain's Brexit Secretary Abruptly Quits, Throwing Deal To Leave EU In Doubt

The UK is set to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019, more than two and half years after the public voted by a margin of 51.9% to 48.1% for Brexit, in a referendum.

Mrs May hailed the meeting as a success but less than 48 hours later she lost key members of Government as David Davis and Boris Johnson quit, stating the paper did not meet the demands of Leave campaigners.

Angry hardline Brexiters have submitted four amendments to the government's trade bill, arguing that Theresa May has broken their trust with the soft Brexit negotiating plan she unveiled at Chequers. Brexit meant Brexit, but now it appears Brexit means remaining subject to European laws.

"I believe this will help the government stick to the promises it made". It has been worrying the prime minister's advisers from the start. "The prime minister has changed her mind before. and we need to get back to what she said at Lancaster House which was a very good blueprint for leaving".

In the introduction to the Brexit blueprint, the Prime Minister said the UK's negotiating position with the European Union "requires pragmatism and compromise from both sides".

Former Conservative party leader Iain Duncan Smith said he had "deep misgivings" about the white paper; veteran Brexit hardliner Bill Cash declared himself "deeply anxious;" and Andrew Bridgen, who has already sent a letter expressing no confidence in May to party authorities, said he "and many colleagues" had "grave concerns" about the path the government is now on, Politico reported.

Speaking at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Mrs May repeated her assertion that the Chequers agreement delivered on her Brexit red lines - leaving the EU's single market and customs union.

Hard Brexiters have pledged to mount a campaign of guerrilla warfare against May's government in an attempt to disrupt the soft Brexit proposal unveiled at Chequers, in which she proposed that the United Kingdom would share a "common rule book" of standards on food and goods after Brexit.

"We deliver that Brexit and we do it in a way that protects jobs and livelihoods and meets our commitment to Northern Ireland".

Andrew Bridgen became the first Conservative MP to declare publicly that he has sent a letter of no confidence in Mrs May to the chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady.

"But the resignation of Brexit Secretary David Davis, and some opportunist goal hanging by Boris Johnson, has cut exporters" celebrations short.

"I think if the Prime Minister makes further concessions with the European Union then there will no doubt be more resignations from Brexiteers in the Cabinet, from junior ministers to PPSs, because there is only so much that you can give in a negotiation", she told the BBC.

But leading Eurosceptic Bernard Jenkin played down the prospects of more walkouts from Mrs May's administration. "We are supporting Theresa for PM", he added.
