Her "third way" vision, which would see the United Kingdom effectively still tied to many mechanisms of the European Union after Brexit, resulted in the resignations of former foreign secretary Boris Johnson and former Brexit secretary David Davis.

British Prime Minister Theresa May won the support of senior ministers and an endorsement from Europe's most powerful leader, Angela Merkel, on Tuesday, surviving the explosive resignations of two top cabinet members in protest at her Brexit plans.

Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

May's office said in a terse statement that the prime minister had accepted Johnson's resignation and would name a replacement soon.

Under her proposal, a treaty would be signed committing the UK to "continued harmonisation" with EU rules - avoiding friction at the UK-EU border, including Northern Ireland. Corbyn, addressing May in parliament, said her government should be ended if it was incapable of governing.

Under current trade agreements, food products can move quickly between the European mainland and the U.K. For example, the BRC said, salad greens can go from trucks in Spain on Monday to U.K. stores by Thursday, still with five days' shelf life.

"I believe this will help the Government stick to the promises it made".

The British government published its long-awaited Brexit blueprint on Thursday that it hopes will restart talks with the European Union, but its launch was mired in farce after a protest by MPs briefly suspended a sitting of the House of Commons. "The Prime Minister can't deliver Brexit and has zero authority left". May appointed staunchly pro-Brexit lawmaker Dominic Raab as the country's new Brexit secretary. Many pro-Brexit lawmakers were furious at what they saw as a sell-out of the clean Brexit they desire.

Tory MPs can trigger a vote of no confidence if 48 of them submit letters to the 1922 backbencher committee, chaired by Sir Graham Brady.
