New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Mr de Blasio was part of a bipartisan group of United States mayors at the Texas border on 21 June, the day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to halt family separation. The letter said a Border Patrol agent asked why they were there and told them to stay put, but the mayor's entourage instead drove back to Mexico.

De Blasio's rebuttal was aimed at a letter from a US Customs and Border Patrol official to the NYPD that alleged the mayor and his security detail violated border crossing laws.

After being denied access NY mayor Bill De Blasio looks through a chain linked fence outside of the children's tent encampment built to deal with the Trump administrations "zero tolerance" policy in Tornillo, Texas, on June 21, 2018.

Now the Associated Press has obtained a letter sent from a border agent to Police Commissioner James O'Neill.

"The border agents ... let our cars cross the American border into Mexico at a normal checkpoint", he said after an unrelated press conference on public housing in Brooklyn.

De Blasio went to a holding facility for immigrant children but was denied entry.

The mayor and his security team crossed the US-Mexican border to get a better view of a tent city holding separated migrant children, after being denied access on the US side.

"It's happening right here, in our name, with our taxpayer dollars, and we got to stop it right away and if the federal government won't answer it, I really do think it's up to all of us, city by city to find any solution we can to reunify these families", de Blasio told Maddow.

The accusations surrounding Mr de Blasio's border crossing come amidst continued controversy surrounding the almost 3,000 children who have been split from undocumented adults entering the US.

"Every country needs reasonable law enforcement on their borders".

They re-entered by auto through a port of entry about three hours later, the letter said. "Any suggestion otherwise is a flat-out lie and an obvious attempt by someone to attack the Mayor because of his advocacy for families being ripped apart at the border by the Trump administration".

A spokesman for the Border Protection had no comment.

Phillips had posted tweets of the mayor's visit on June 21. "ICE is broken, it's divisive and it should be abolished", the mayor tweeted last month.
