An explosion ripped through fuel tanks near Egypt's Cairo airport on Thursday evening, igniting a fire in the area, but the country's civil aviation minister said air movement was unaffected.

All flights were temporarily suspended while an investigation into the blast took place.

A massive explosion has occurred in the vicinity of Cairo International Airport.

Al Arabiya reported that the explosion took place near the airport's main fuel storage facility. However, some local residents say that flight operations have not been halted, and air-traffic-tracking website FlightRadar24 reports that Cairo's airport is still operating. In February 2015 authorities discovered bombs planted at the Cairo International Airport on the same day that a blast killed a man in Egypt's second city of Alexandria.

The cause of the detonation and fire at the fuel depot is unknown as of yet.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
