Aston Martin V8 Cygnet REVEALED ahead of Goodwood debut - Tiny car has supercar power
14 July, 2018, 02:22
Instead of the 1.3-litre motor inherited from the Toyota iQ on which its based, this Cygnet gets the 4.7-litre, 430bhp V8 engine from the Vantage S. It's capable of 430bhp and 361lb ft, and will hit 60mph from a standstill just 4.2 seconds - faster than the Vantage S. And with a top speed of 170mph the V8 Cygnet is over 60mph faster than the standard supermini. Fewer than 150 units were sold in the United Kingdom, putting Aston Martin well below its goal of 4,000 per year.
The suits at Gaydon say the V8 Cygnet was built to show the fun side of Aston Martin and can be seen at the ongoing Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. Now, the Cygnet is back, but this time as a one-off model packing a V-8 engine instead of an inline-four. Borrowing the 4.7-liter V-8 engine from the previous-gen Vantage S, the vehicle makes 430 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque.
The interior is a curious mix of Cygnet and Vantage GT3, with Aston Martin suggesting the auto could "easily be used for competition". The dry weight of the auto is rated at 1,375kg, around 500kg more than in the regular Cygnet.
New carbon fiber fenders were cooked up to cover the new wheels and a roll cage was installed to toughen the chassis as well as provide extra safety in case of a high-speed mishap. This has been made possible via new front bulkhead and transmission tunnel.
A large steel fuel tank is now stowed in the boot of the Cygnet, while a race-ready extinguisher system and racing harnesses make it ultimately developed the the track. It features subframes and a suspension derived from the previous-gen Vantage as well.
Speaking of the engine, it produces 313kW of power and 490Nm of torque, put to the rear wheels through a seven-speed Sportshift II paddle-shift transmission.
From the outside, the auto is still recognisably a Cygnet with just a black mesh grille and large wheel arches to accommodate the 19-inch alloy wheels.
At the rear of the auto the distinguishing new feature is the central twin exhaust pipes. There's an FIA-compliant fire suppression system, and a Recaro racing seat in front of a removable Alcantara suede-wrapped steering wheel and a unique dashboard with the Vantage's instrument cluster.
