The closures leave just one store standing in the US, in Bend, Oregon.

"These are the last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska that survived and it is sad to say goodbye to our dedicated customers", said a post co-signed by Kelli Vey, District Manager, and Kevin Daymude, General Manager.

Both stores will close their doors on Monday with plans to reopen for an inventory sale starting at noon Tuesday that will run through July and August, according to a statement on the Blockbuster official Facebook page. "The loyalty was huge, I mean they were like family and we'll miss them desperately". And who's to say how long it will stay in business? What a great time to build your media library and share some Blockbuster memories with us. "I want to talk to Kevin (Daymude) personally because we can't have this happen'". Blockbuster then peaked in 2004 with an incredible 9,094 stores worldwide ... and then quickly plummeted to declare bankruptcy in 2010.

After next week, Bend, Oregon will be the proud owner of the only functioning Blockbuster Video in the country.

Around two months ago, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver attempted to rescue the DeBarr Road Blockbuster by donating the jockstrap used by Russell Crowe in Cinderella Man, but while the unconventional choice of memorabilia helped create short-lived interest and increased customers, it wasn't enough to secure the store's future.

"Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years", the post continued. "Did you get it in?"

Oliver bought the merchandise-which also included a robe, boxer shorts, the hood from Robin Hood and a vest from Les Miserables-in Crowe's "divorce auction".

Daymude sent photos to Crowe of the memorabilia on display in his story. But Alaska has been something of a die-hard for the chain, with stores in Wasilla, North Pole and Soldotna finally closing earlier this year, along with another Anchorage location.

Blockbuster formally closed all company-owned stores by January 2014, leaving franchisees to fend for themselves. There's even a parody account on Twitter claiming to be "The Last Blockbuster", but until yesterday there were actually still three remaining.
