After ministers' promised to compromise on his demands, Mr Grieve did not push his amendment to a vote and most pro-EU Tory MPs backed down from a potential rebellion on a similar House of Lords amendment to the bill.

They reassured anti-Brexit MPs that the government would accept some of their core demands to give parliament a meaningful say on the terms of Britain's European Union divorce, including - potentially - a new deadline for a deal to be agreed with Brussels that could make it hard for the government.

Following last-minute talks with rebel ringleader Dominic Grieve, Mrs May avoided defeat on a number of key amendments, including one which would have delivered the Commons a "meaningful vote" on the final Brexit deal.

There will be further votes on the legislation today, however May should escape unscathed.

Theresa May was forced into a major compromise yesterday when she had to agree to give parliament a greater role in Brexit negotiations to avert a defeat at the hands of rebels from her own party who want to keep close European Union ties after Britain leaves.

Sarah Wollaston, a prominent Tory Remain rebel, has indicated that she will accept this pledge from the Government, and will therefore not be voting against her party.

Speaking at prime minister's questions, May said the government meant to bring forward its own amendment, but stressed that she could not allow MPs to bind the government's hands or to open it up to the risk that Brexit could be reversed. The victory was Pyrrhic, as the government's earlier climbdown all but ensures MPs will have an increased say on the terms of any deal.

An issue paper published last week by the United Kingdom government which proposed keeping the whole of the United Kingdom - and not just Northern Ireland - in line with European Union regulations until a permanent future relationship can be negotiated, which it proposed would be 2021. And if there is still no agreement before February 15 parliament would vote on whether to take over the Brexit process. "Any compromise [amendment] would have to be tabled by Govt in Lords".

"First, we must never do anything that undermines the Government's negotiating position or encourages delays in the negotiations", Mr Davis said. Brexiteers fear it is a Trojan horse to frustrate Brexit and bind the prime minister's hands.

The government said it would produce its revised plan on Thursday.

This interpretation was also endorsed by Labour's Shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer. He said: "Facing the prospect of a humiliating defeat, Theresa May has been forced to enter negotiations with her backbenchers and offer a so-called concession". We'll have to wait and see.
