Willemse walk-out report expected at 3pm

SuperSport said yesterday it would announce the outcome of the independent review into the incident at 3pm at its offices in Randburg.

"Ashwin has a contract with SuperSport‚" said Khobane.

Khobane explained that Willemse still has a contract with SuperSport, but neither him, Mallet nor Botha are scheduled to commentate live this coming weekend.

'Although I did not interview Mr Willemse I was informed by both Messrs Mallett and [Naas] Botha that Mr Willemse was no pushover, and would strongly defend his views whenever he differed with theirs, ' wrote Maleka.

He added that they would make an attempt to sit down with Willemse regarding a way forward.

They said according to the review, there was no racism involved in the incident and Willemse was unjustified in his walking out. "He is aggrieved by what happened on May 19, and considers racism to have inspired the conduct of his colleagues".

Despite this, the two responded to a question from the media, denying racism in the incident.

SuperSport have downplayed fears over a potential backlash.

Following former Springbok and SuperSport analyst, Ashwin Willemse's walk out of a live broadcast following the Lions 42-24 victory over the Brumbies on 19 May, SuperSport and MultiChoice investigated the incident.

EWN sports reporter, Philasande Sixaba says Gideon Khobane gave a comprehensive report with findings of Advocate Maleka.

In an email from Mallett to executive producer Scott Seward in October 2016, the former Bok coach says: 'I really enjoy working with Bobs [Gcobani Bobo] and Xola [Ntshinga], Scott. "We've been very reconciliatory in our approach because we know what a complex and sensitive issue this is".

Willemse had indicated, through his legal representatives, that he felt the independent probe was not an appropriate forum to "redress the infringement on his human rights and his dignity". Based on our next engagement with him‚ that will determine where we go.
