White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Sunday accused Canadian Prime Minister of "attacking" President Donald Trump after Canada's leader announced reciprocal tariffs on the USA and asserting his nation would not be 'pushed around.' Zachary Goelman reports.
Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Sunday that Nafta talks are continuing, and that Canada believes "economic common sense will prevail" in the end.
Freeland reiterated that Canada would retaliate to USA tariffs in a measured and reciprocal way, adding the country would always be willing to talk.
The spat drew in Germany and France, which sharply criticized Trump's decision to abruptly withdraw his support for a Group of Seven communique hammered out at a Canadian summit on Saturday, accusing him of destroying trust and acting inconsistently. "They have tariffs on certain dairy and food products - 290 [to] 295 percent".
Trump's supporters also criticised Trudeau. "He ought to come out today and wish President Trump well in the negotiations instead of taking pot shots at him".
Mr Trump had said that the decision of the Indian government to reduce the tariff from 75 per cent to 50 per cent was not enough and asked that it should be reciprocal, as the United States imposes "zero tax" on the import of motorcycles.
Trump thundered on Twitter: "PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he 'will not be pushed around.' Very dishonest & weak".
On Sunday, after the summit, Trudeau held a press conference in which he spoke about American trade policies.
Late last month, Canadian officials told the Trump administration there were two USA demands they would never agree to in NAFTA: a sunset clause that would automatically terminate the deal in five years and the abolition of the Chapter 19 dispute resolution panels, one source said.
White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He told CNN's Jake Tapper that "of course" Trump's tweets about Trudeau actually had to do with North Korea "in large part".
"Let's be serious and worthy of our people".
"To be honest with you, Prime Minister Trudeau, I respect. Sometimes it seems that the American president thinks that only one side wins and everyone else loses", Merkel said, apparently speaking about Trump's verbal attacks against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
"I have made it very clear to the president that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do because Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau said.
"We need Russian Federation for disarmament talks" and for discussions about both Ukraine and Syria, Merkel said.
In an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union," Kudlow argued that Trudeau's critique amounted to a betrayal of the G7, as well as the U.S.
In the air by then, Mr. Trump tweeted: "Based on Justin's falsestatements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!" That came after months of threatening, and then imposing sanctions on America's top trading partners, like Canada.
Trump bantered easily with Trudeau, joking that the neighbouring leader had "agreed to cut all tariffs and all trade barriers".
According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with USA (guess they were bragging and got caught!). He railed about what he called "ridiculous and unacceptable" tariffs on USA goods and vowed to end them.
