Another company listed as having an Israeli address, ERPScan, was also added to the Treasury blacklist, which freezes all USA property belonging to the companies and prohibits United States citizens from doing business with them.

According to a Treasury Department announcement, one of the entities is a company controlled by Russia's Federal Security Service, or FSB.

"Later on, my university buddy invited me to work for the Digital Security company, which was the place where the best hackers from our city were working, and probably the first Russian company which was focused on what we call penetration tests now".

The U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions on three Russian individuals and five firms on Monday, saying they had worked with Moscow's main intelligence service on ways to conduct cyberattacks against the United States and its allies. The Treasury Department targeted FSB with sanctions in March for its involvement in several Kremlin-led cyber attacks. The Obama administration sanctioned Russia's FSB in December 2016, citing the Russian government's aggressive harassment of US officials and cyber operations aimed at the 2016 presidential election.

'The United States is committed to aggressively targeting any entity or individual working at the direction of the FSB whose work threatens the United States and will continue to utilize our sanctions authorities, including those provided under CAATSA, to counter the constantly evolving threats emanating from Russian Federation'.

More recently, USA officials also revealed that Kremlin-linked hackers staged a multi-year cyberattack campaign on the American energy sector and other elements of critical infrastructure.

Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which administers sanctions, targeted a Russian cyber firm, two of its subsidiaries, a cyber research center and an underwater technology company for their work for the FSB. Hacks in the runup to the United States presidential election in 2016 are also linked to Russian Federation.

The three individuals named in the new sanctions, Aleksandr Lvovich Tribun, Oleg Sergeyevich Chirikov, and Vladimir Yakovlevich Kaganskiy, were all senior staff at Divetechnoservices.

According to the Treasury Department, "Russia has been active in tracking undersea communication cables" which carry global telecommunications data.

Russian Federation was ousted from the then-Group of Eight in 2014 as punishment for annexing Crimea and supporting pro-Kremlin separatists in eastern Ukraine.
