However, her concession to "seek to negotiate" a "customs arrangement" with the European Union was enough to placate Conservative MPs who were threatening to rebel.

- Vote kicks threat to government stability out into the long grass again.

The House of Commons overturned an amendment to the EU (Withdrawal) Bill, tabled by the unelected House of Lords, seeking to keep Britain aligned to the bloc's customs union.

The amendment, which would push the government towards adopting a Norway-style deal with Brussels, was voted down by 327 votes to 126, a majority of 201. Similarly, the House of Commons also defeated an attempt by some government and opposition MPs to remove the "exit date" from the withdrawal bill.

Should the prime minister go back on her pledge, the rebels are confident their amendment will be inserted into the bill in the Lords. Part C would give parliament the power to issue direct orders to the government if no deal was in place by 15 February 2019.

The government agreed to discuss elements of a rebel plan to create new checks and balances on the Brexit deal, and where possible incorporate them into the laws that will formally end Britain's European Union membership.

The amendment's failure heads off an imminent threat to the stability of the government and may support Sterling over the medium term if the forthcoming discussions do as some analysts think it will and hampers the government's efforst to take the United Kingdom out of the European Union.

"Overall, the latest developments are supportive for the pound".

Pro-EU lawmakers threatened on Wednesday to withdraw their support for Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit strategy if she does not follow through on concessions they thought they had been promised.

Robert Buckland, the current attorney general, appeared to confirm earlier claims by Sky News when speaking with the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg.

British Prime Minister Theresa May survived another key Brexit vote on Wednesday (Jun 14) but her pro-European MPs warned they could yet rebel if she backtracks on promises to give parliament a greater say in the final withdrawal deal.

Supporters of the EEA argue it would give the United Kingdom the closest possible relationship with the European Union without actually being a member, as it would offer full access to the single market. The government should be investing more in housing, the health service and education to relieve pressure on services, he said, not ending free movement of labor.

The Lords Brexit Bill amendment had called for the government to make it a negotiating objective to remaining in the EEA.

Participants hold a British Union flag and an EU flag at Parliament Square in London, Britain June 19, 2016. Since then both the UK Labour Party and Conservative Party have made manifesto commitments to delivering the outcome of the vote.

The government said before the vote it disagreed with the amendment and the Labour frontbench was expected to either vote the same way or abstain.

Yvette Cooper, the former shadow home secretary who now chairs the home affairs select committee said she would obey the party whip and not vote for membership of the EEA only because she wanted to try to build consensus. "That's what this House voted on Article 50".
