After they left the auto, they confronted driver Ahmad El Boutari about it and he said that they were being "disrespectful".

She said they had only "peck kissed" and were "not even touching" but that Mr El Boutari had been "very angry".

The driver says: "It's illegal".

The recording began as one of the women asked the driver, who had exited the auto, what the issue was.

"We understand that someone would feel uncomfortable if people were making out in the vehicle", Iovine says. One of the women says, "It's not illegal to kiss in New York" and threatens him, "We're going to get you fired". She maintained that she is aware of the ride sharing company's rules against sex in the backseat and said she and her girlfriend did nothing more than kiss.

In an interview with NBC New York, Iovine admitted that their exchange "turned into anger, which we are not proud of".

"I said ... don't do it", the driver, identified by the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission as Ahmad El Boutari, tells the women who then ask the motorist if kissing is "illegal" in an Uber.

A confrontation between an uber driver and a same-sex couple was recorded on video. "You are not allowed to do this", he can be heard saying.

They say the driver forced them out. "Nothing is illegal. It is not illegal to kiss in NY". "That's when we pulled out our phone", Ms Pichl claimed, according to ABC7 Eyewitness News.

"I think, for both us, it was just a shock, not really knowing what to say", Pichl said.

Uber's Community Guidelines state, in the "Give riders and drivers some personal space" section, "We all value our personal space and privacy".

"Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination, and we have reached out to the rider regarding her experience". Normally private, they say they now plan to attend the city's June 24 Pride parade, which celebrates the LGBTQ community.

An Uber spokeswoman told ABC News that they are in touch with the women and investigating the incident.

The Taxi & Limousine Commission, which is responsible for regulating Uber and other ride-hail apps, did not immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment.

Uber refunded the $22 fare and apologized to her for the inconvenience. "This goes to show that it can happen anywhere".

Fromberg noted that the city does not regulate behaviour in Uber cars and similar services, but he called what the driver did to the women "an unacceptable and repugnant act that will not be tolerated".
