U.S. Babies, Toddlers Eat Way Too Much Added Sugar, Study Finds

Toddlers Consume More 'Added Sugar' Than The Recommended Amount For Adults Most American Toddlers Eat More Than the Recommended Sugar Intake for Adults, Study Shows

Eating foods with added sugar at an early age can influence food preferences that set a pattern for less healthy food choices later in life, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said. Even more, the trend is aggravating as they grow up, says the CDC.

A new study shows American toddlers are getting too much sugar.

It is the first time researchers looked at sugar consumption among children younger than 2 years old, lead research Kirsten Herrick told ABC News.

This study was carried out with the participation of the parents of 800 children from Maryland, aged between 6 and 23 months, who were consuming added sugars.

And a whopping 99 percent of babies 19 to 23 months old averaged just over 7 teaspoons of added sugar on a given day, more than the amount in a Snickers candy bar, the study authors said.

Excessive sugar consumption is one of the most known common origin of obesity, dental degradation.

Most toddlers in the US eat more sugar every day than is recommended for adults, according to a study. She presented the findings on Sunday 10 June at Nutrition 2018, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition held in Boston. This exceeded the daily recommended limit (for added sugar) which is 6 teaspoons or less for children aged 2 to 19 as well as adult women.

The parents of the study participants were asked to note down everything their child ate in a 24-hour period.

As their names suggest, the former is added to foods as they are processed or prepared while the latter is found naturally in sources like fruits, vegetables, and milk.

In the future, researchers will investigate the specific foods children consume their added sugar.

Herrick said the best way to cut sugar from the diets of children and adults is to "choose foods that you know don't have them, like fresh fruits and vegetables".

Researchers cataloged food items that contained extra cane sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, honey and other sugars.

About 85 percent of them were found to eat added sugar in a given day.

In the USA, at least one in five children ages 6 to 19 years old is obese, according to the CDC.

According to the American Heart Association, female adults are recommended to eat no more than 100 calories or 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day.

The researchers say that at present there are no specific recommendations for children under the age of 2 years in the United States government's 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA).
