In turn, the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Saturday that he told US President Donald Trump that US tariffs on steel and aluminum were "insulting" and "not helping".

The president said the USA was "pretty close" to reaching an agreement on the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico and had discussed two types of sunset provisions in which any of the countries could leave the deal.

G7 leaders issued a joint pledge Saturday to combat protectionism and cut trade barriers as they wrapped up a fractious summit in Canada soured by a row over the USA imposition of tariffs on its allies.

Earlier, Trudeau had told reporters that Trump's decision to invoke national security to justify United States tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum was "kind of insulting" to Canadian veterans who had stood by their U.S. allies in conflicts dating back to World War I.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed afterwards to press ahead with retaliatory tariffs on 1 July.

The president says the U.S. is "pretty close" to an agreement on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and discussing two types of sunset provisions in which any of the countries could leave the deal.

While talking tough with US allies such as Canada and the E.U., Trump repeated his call for Russian Federation to be allowed back into the elite club, which includes Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the USA and Japan.

Ben Nelms / Reuters Canada's Minister of Finance Bill Morneau holds a news conference after the G7 Finance Ministers Summit in Whistler, B.C. on June 2, 2018. "The U.S. pays tremendous tariffs on dairy, as an example, 270 per cent. we don't want to pay anything, why should we pay anything?"

"They do so much more business with us than we do with them ... the numbers are so astronomically against them? we win that war a thousand times out of a thousand".

He suggested Mr Trudeau was "very dishonest and weak".

It also covered other issues including relations with Russian Federation.

"I highlighted directly to the president that Canadians did not take it lightly that the United States has moved forward with significant tariffs", said Trudeau.

But Trump had already said he would not hesitate to shut countries out of the USA market if they retaliate to his tariffs.

In the last week, Trump and Trudeau have exchanged tough words over trade after the US imposed hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, Mexico and Europe.

Still, the United States and European Union will establish a dialogue on trade within the next two weeks, signaling a modest step forward for the bitterly divided allies of the G7. Trump has asked countries to end tariffs and trade barriers in his push for "fair and reciprocal" trade. Macron said Thursday on Twitter, "The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be". The picture that has gone viral on social media shows Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron staring down US President Donald Trump.

He missed Trudeau's introductory statement and entered the room while Gender Equality Advisory Council co-chair Isabelle Hudon was speaking. "And before discussions could begin on any of this, we would have to ensure Russian Federation is amending its ways and taking a different route" - Trump's proposal receives short shrift from Britain's Theresa May who has accused Russian Federation of being behind the recent poisoning of a former spy. But in 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin alarmed world leaders after moving troops into eastern Ukraine and taking over Crimea.

On Friday, Mr Trump made a surprise call for Moscow to be readmitted, but German Chancellor Angela Merkel said other members were against the idea.
