The US President Donald Trump was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in reaching an agreement to work toward de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Now that the Trump-Kim summit has come to a successful end, people have started guessing whether this breakthrough in relations between the USA and DPRK will bring its leaders the Nobel Peace Prize. "This president is actually going to earn it".

Nominations must be sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee before February 1.

The Hill reports that it was two members of Norway's right-wing Progress Party, Christian Tybring-Gjedde and Per-Willy Amundsen, who made the nomination.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said in April that Trump deserved the prize.

Politicians, academics, former peace laureates, directors of peace research institutes and current and former members of the Nobel Committee are among those who have the right to propose candidates.

At the same time, other Twitter users have expressed their discontent with the prospect of Trump and Kim Jong-un getting the Nobel Peace Prize. "Divisive and irresponsible from a presidential hopeful".

Former President Barack Obama earned the prize, as did Jimmy Carter, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Jagland declined to comment on Trump's chances after the summit.

Syse told Reuters that his writings as a political philosopher and commentator "should in no way be read as comments pertaining to the prize or to our process in what is a five-person committee". So while Trump and Kim could be among the 330 nominees for 2018, an award linked to North Korea may be more likely in 2019. "The sanctions decimated the North Korean economy and have been largely credited for bringing North Korea to the negotiating table", Republican lawmakers wrote.
