Trump may pardon Muhammad Ali, but late boxer may not need it

Trump floats possibility of pardoning Muhammad Ali Trump may pardon deceased boxing great Muhammad Ali

Among those he has pardoned is Jack Johnson, a black heavyweight champion who was convicted in 1913 in a racially charged case of taking a woman across state lines for "immoral purposes". Four years after he was convicted by a jury in Houston, sentenced to five years in prison and then stripped of his heavyweight championship by boxing commissions, the Court declared that Ali was improperly drafted in the first place.

He was never imprisoned while his case was under appeal and in 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction.

The commutation, which is different than a pardon, puts a renewed focus on the Trump administration's push for prison and sentencing reform. "I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali", according to a pool report of the president's remarks.

"We appreciate President Trump's sentiment, but a pardon is unnecessary", said Ron Tweel, Ali's lawyer in a statement after Trump's comment.

Khalilah Ali suggested a better venue for Trump's forgiveness.

Ali, who passed away in 2016, is among "thousands of names" Donald Trump says he is considering for clemency.

Trump has also touted on twitter that he had "absolute power" to pardon himself, prompting the White House press office to clarify that it wouldn't be necessary for Trump to do so because he had done "nothing wrong".

In 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Ali's conviction in a unanimous decision, accepting Ali's argument that he should be excused on religious grounds.

Johnson, who died in 1946, was convicted using a law originally meant to crack down on human trafficking and prostitution. Just before boarding a plane to attend the G-7 summit in Canada, the president told a group of reporters that he is considering the pardons of 3,000 people, including one legendary athlete.

Trump said his Pardon Attorney is already preparing the recommendation for Ali's clemency.

He also issued a pardon to Dick Cheney s former chief of staff Lewis "Scooter" Libby, who was convicted of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in connection with the leak of a Central Intelligence Agency operative s identity.

"President Trump has spent much of his first 18 months in office degrading National Football League players who protest police brutality and racial injustice".

Trump clearly pleased with the publicity he's gained with his recent celebrity pardons, made a point this morning of informing reporters he's got more up his sleeve.

"We cried, maybe, on the phone for like three minutes straight", said an emotional Kardashian. "And if I find and my committee finds that they're unfairly treated, then we will pardon them or at least let them out".
