Trump pulls out of joint G-7 statement, attacks Trudeau
10 June, 2018, 19:32
US President Donald Trump on Saturday said he had instructed his representatives not to endorse a joint communique put out by the Group of Seven leaders after what he called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's "false statements" at a news conference. In it, Merkel stares coldly, both hands braced on a table, at a defiant United States president Donald Trump, who is seated with his arms crossed. "Let us be serious and worthy of our people", the statement said.
"The countries are all going to retaliate - what you will get is a period of time where each of the countries is going to have to evaluate the impact of the new tariffs".
When Trump left Quebec it was thought that a compromise had been reached, despite the tension and determination of European leaders President Emmanuel Macron of France and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany to push back on Trump's assault on the world trade system.
Trudeau, who has been sparring with Mr. Trump on trade in recent days, announced at the conclusion of the G-7 summit in Canada that the retaliatory tariffs will go into effect July 1.
"The six countries of the G7 without the United States are a bigger market taken together than the American market".
"In short, a long, frank rant which is undoubtedly very unusual in this kind of formats". "The Prime Minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President".
Trump's bombshell tweet came after G7 nations appeared to have papered over the cracks in their alliance at the two-day summit in La Malbaie, Quebec, where Trump defiantly brandished his "America First" agenda.
"This agreement.is good news and it marks a collective desire to stabilise things", Mr Macron said.
The outburst suggested that any deal had collapsed and his more or less explicit threat to impose sanctions on imports of cars will outrage his ostensible allies - in particular Germany and Canada who produce many for the large U.S. market.
Kudlow added that Trump had made the decision to pull out of the agreement in an attempt to save face ahead of his historic summit with North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, in Singapore.
His early departure means he will miss a working session among the leaders on climate change and clean energy, as well as talks among the G7 and poorer countries focused on the health of oceans.
President Trump had shown up late, suggested Russian Federation rejoin the alliance over his allies' objections, harangued leaders over supposedly unfair trade practices, and generally acted as a one-man diplomatic wrecking ball.
Russian Federation was suspended from the group - then called the G8 - in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.
Ms Merkel said European Union countries at the summit agreed that the conditions to readmit Russian Federation had not been met and even Moscow seemed to reject the suggestion.
Mr Trump's presidency has been clouded by a federal investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and possible collusion by his campaign.
