Rakmat Akilov had said he wanted to punish Sweden for joining a coalition against Daesh.

Akilov hijacked a beer truck outside a restaurant in central Stockholm on April 7 previous year and sped about 500 metres (yards) down a pedestrian street, ploughing into shoppers before crashing the vehicle into a department store.

The fatalities were a British man, a Belgian woman, and three Swedes, including an 11-year-old girl.

Prosecutor Hans Ihrman called him a "security risk to society" during his trial at the Stockholm District Court.

Akilov's defence lawyer, Johan Eriksson, argued that his client be given a more lenient sentence because he was cooperative with the investigation following the attack.

Akilov fled the scene but was quickly arrested and confessed to police. The court ordered Akilov to be expelled from the country after he serves his sentence and be banned from ever returning.

Witnesses said the truck drove straight into the entrance of the Ahlens Department Store on Drottninggatan, the city's biggest pedestrian street, sending shoppers screaming and running.

At a press conference following the verdict and sentencing, it was announced that families of the victims who died in the attack would receive 60,000 Swedish krona (£5,155) in compensation while moderately injured victims would receive 120,000 krona (£10,741) and seriously injured victims would be entitled to 150,000 krona (£12,889).

"He has also been found guilty of 119 cases of attempted murder, which have been labelled as (an) attempted terrorist offence".

Akilov had left a wife and four children behind in Uzbekistan in order to earn money to send home, according to reports.

He came to Sweden in 2014 and applied for asylum, claiming he had been persecuted.

A native of Uzbekistan Rakhmat Akilov, who has made arrival on the people in the center of Stockholm in April 2017, sentenced to life imprisonment.

Instead, he went underground, eluding authorities' attempts to track him down.

Soon after the attack, Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said Sweden would stick by its open, liberal values.

On April 6 - the eve of the attack - Akilov swore allegiance to Daesh.

Akilov has said he proposed carrying out an attack in Stockholm to Daesh on their behalf.

Investigators have found internet chat logs with unknown people in which Akilov discussed becoming a martyr.
