A powerful natural disaster struck Osaka and neighboring prefectures on June 18, knocking out power in a widespread area and disrupting Shinkansen and local train services.

Japanese media including public broadcaster NHK said collapsing walls had killed an 80-year-old man and a 9-year-old girl, and that another man in his 80s was killed after being crushed by a toppling bookcase. "Almost all of the dishes fell and shattered on the floor", said Kaori Iwakiri, a 50-year-old nurse in Moriguchi, just north of Osaka city.

Three people were confirmed dead, including a nine-year-old girl, who was reported to have died after a school wall fell on her. Several others are reported in a state of "cardiopulmonary arrest", a condition usually used by Japanese authorities until a formal examination has been conducted to confirm death.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck around 8am on Monday about 10kms underground, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

It was the strongest shaking registered in Osaka under records which date back to 1923. There were no reports of abnormalities at its nuclear plants in the region.

No tsunami is expected, according to the agency.

Service on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line, which links Shin-Osaka and Hakata stations, was suspended due to a power outage.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told an emergency news conference that the government had received no reports of major damage due to the quake. Power was quickly restored to more than 170,000 homes that had earlier been cut off, regional utility Kansai Electric Power Co. said. Television images showed passengers getting off trains onto the tracks between stations. Vehicle makers Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota and Daihatsu all stopped production at plants in the region.

Live footage showed burst water mains and a house on fire after the quake hit Osaka, which will host next year's Group of 20 summit, just before 8 a.m. (2300 GMT Sunday) as commuters were heading to work. In 1995, a magnitude 6.9 quake killed more than 6,000 people when it struck in neighbouring Kobe.
