The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it's now investigating 124 cases in 36 states of people becoming infected with the virus after "being linked to contact live poultry in backyard flocks".

The Salmonella has been linked to the pre-cut cantaloupe, watermelon or fruit salad containing melon purchased at either Walmart or Kroger stores, including Jay C and Payless stores.

Health officials have issued an advisory about a salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melons sold at certain stores in the Midwest.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating the source of the salmonella. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria.

Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development supervisors say 32 people in Michigan have become ill because of the outbreak. No deaths have been reported from the bacterial infections, but 31 people have been hospitalized.

The investigation into the outbreak is expanding rapidly.

MI is part of a multistate outbreak of Salmonella.

Most people recover from a salmonella infection without treatment.

The CDC says there have been more hospitalizations with this outbreak than usual.

It's not just Walmart pre-cut melon. The elderly, infants, and those with weak immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness. The CDC said people can contract the virus from touching live poultry or their environment, even if the birds appear to be healthy and clean. Make sure to wash the melons before you start cutting.
