The UFC did not announce whether the fight would continue, but the two fighters were introduced and faced off at the ceremonial weigh-ins later on Friday.

Yoel Romero tipped the scale at 185.2 pounds on his second attempt, officially missing weight for the main event of UFC 225.

The rest of the fighters on the card also made weight for the Saturday, June 9, event.

But Whittaker has agreed to save the main event and face him in a non-title bout. He will maintain the belt, win or lose.

The fight will still take place, and Whittaker will retain his title if he wins.

The two combatants met at UFC 213 last summer for the interim middleweight belt when Whittaker defeated Romero in a closely contested battle via a unanimous decision.

"It's very hard. We come here to fight for the title", Romero said.

Now recovered from a staph infection and a nasty case of chickenpox, Whittaker is ready to get back in the Octagon with the "Soldier of God".

While Whittaker admits it's a "pain in the arse" to face the same man in consecutive fights, he is not one to pick and choose his opponents.

Yoel Romero has had two chances at UFC middleweight gold this year, and both times he couldn't capitalize on the opportunity by simply making the required weight. Now that he is on the sidelines working more and more with FOX Sports, the former UFC middleweight champion remains that way. "I'm refueling and getting ready for a fight". "I think the punishment should be more severe and they should force people to move up in weight if they can't make it".
