"Julen Lopetegui will join the club after Spain's participation in the World Cup, after two years leading the national team", the club's official website announced.

The Champions League winners had been without a boss since Zinedine Zidane revealed that he was stepping down from his role last month, but the Spanish giants have acted quickly to secure the Frenchman's replacement.

Zidane's shock departure came after he had guided Madrid to a third straight Champions League title.

Lopetegui will take the reigns after coaching Spain in the World Cup, with the 51-year-old agreeing a three-year deal with the La Liga side.

It remains to be seen if he will head to Real as a World Cup victor, though Spain's squad is stocked with exciting talent.

He coached Madrid's feeder club Castilla in 2008/09 before taking charge of Spain's youth teams.

Lopetegui's side qualified for the World Cup by topping their group with nine wins out of 10. They also scored 36 goals, and their form means they are one of the favourites ahead of the tournament in Russian Federation.

Lopetegui will have his work cut out at Real Madrid, where standards are high and patience tends to be short with managers unless they deliver instant success.

The 51-year-old took charge of Spain after Euro 2016 - and signed a new extension until 2020 just last month - but the appointment means the impending World Cup in Russian Federation will be his only major tournament in charge of the national team.
