Queen, 92, had eye surgery last month

Why Does Queen Elizabeth Have Two Birthdays The Queen has surgery to remove a cataract from her eye

This week she attended a demonstration put on by medical detection dogs at Buckingham Palace with The Duchess of Cornwall.

Cataracts are when the lens, a small transparent disc inside the eye, develops cloudy patches.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that she underwent the surgery before the Royal Wedding last month.

Earlier media reported that Elizabeth II was operated in a private hospital king Edward VII in London.

Over time these patches usually become bigger causing blurry, misty vision and eventually blindness, if left untreated.

Although she turned 92 in April, the queen traditionally holds an official birthday on the second Saturday of June - this weekend - to enjoy more favourable weather.

Cataracts are more common among elderly people.

Cataracts obviously affect the vision, but symptoms can vary between sufferers.

In April, the husband of Elizabeth II - Duke of Edinburgh Philip - had surgery on the hip joint.

What happens during cataract surgery?

During the operation, which takes between 30 and 45 minutes, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a plastic one.

It is the most common operation performed in the United Kingdom, with a high success rate in improving eyesight. It is typically carried out as day surgery under local anaesthetic and patients usually go home on the same day, but it can take four to six weeks to recover.

In July 1995, the Queen Mother had a cataract operation at the age of 94. During recovery, patients have to protect their eyes from bright light for at least a few weeks.
